Chapter Thirteen
Torque's request to come clean passed over Brandy's face, dulling her eyes and weakening her stubborn chin. Torque leaned forward, elbows to knees, and stayed quiet. He feared making matters worse, when all he was trying to do was help her.
The quieter she became, the more he wanted to kill the person who put the sadness in her eyes.
"Sunshine...I only want to help," he repeated.
"I'm sorry." She glanced at him and wrinkled her nose. "It's a long, confusing story and I'm ashamed of my failure to fix everything."
"I got time," he said, hoping she'd rely on him.
The last couple of weeks, she'd taken him to a place he never knew existed or that he wanted. He woke up every morning looking forward to pushing her away, and went home every night from the bar wishing he was going home with her. She'd sunk her claws into him and hung on when others knew to stay away.
She had him wanting to put some good inside of him, so she could find it.
He wanted to be that man she needed.
Hell, he didn't want anything bad to touch her, because he'd already made up his mind that she belonged to him.
"I will help, but you have to tell me what is going on," he said.
"My dad's the only relative I have," she blurted, rubbing her fingers over the palm of her hand in worry. "He's got some issues that require me to make sure he stays home, so I can keep an eye on him."
"What's wrong with him?" he asked, leaning back.
"He's crazy," she said as if stating the car she drove was a Cadillac.
"And you take care of him," he stated, respecting her more for her dedication to her father when roles should be reversed and her father was the one who should take care of her. She deserved someone looking out for her, loving her, supporting her.
"Yes and no." She moistened her lips. "When he's content, he's capable of working and looking out for himself. The problem is, he has something inside of him that is stronger than being a responsible man, a father, a...I don't know, a normal, rational person. That craziness overrules his commonsense. So, I make sure he stays out of trouble and doesn't ignore his responsibilities. When he gets the urge to go off on his own, I worry about him doing harm to himself or someone else. He makes bad decisions and can lose every penny to his name in a matter of hours doing stupid shit."
He rubbed his hand over his jaw, keeping his opinion to himself. Normal father and daughter dynamics were out of his comfort zone. He had no idea how families worked, except for those who were Bantorus members and married. He also hated to see her working and worrying over a grown man, even if he was her dad.
"I take it that was your dad on the phone earlier?" he asked.
She nodded. "Yes."
"But you're here, and he's...?"
"California," she said.
"Does he
